The Heart-Head-Body Method
A daily check-in in three dimensions, developed by relationship therapist Joey Steur. Five minutes that make a difference.
"How was your day?" is a well-intentioned question that rarely gets a real answer. "Good" or "busy" — and then the conversation is over.
The Heart-Head-Body method is different. Instead of one open question, you check in with your partner across three layers. Each layer reveals something the other two don't.
The Three Dimensions
Heart — emotions
Which emotion is most present for you right now? Not "good" or "tired", but the real underlying layer: happy, anxious, relieved, lonely, excited? Emotions are the barometer of your inner life.
Head — thoughts
What's going through your mind? Which worries, plans or thoughts are taking up space — but you haven't said out loud yet? The head keeps turning while we do other things. Naming what's there brings relief.
Body — physical
How does your body feel? Do you have energy? Tension in your shoulders? Are you exhausted or alive? The body tells what words sometimes can't — and it gives your partner context to truly understand you.
How to Do It
Choose a fixed moment — after dinner works well for most couples. Sit next to or across from each other. Put your phone away.
- Partner A checks in on Heart, Head and Body — in their own words, no explanation needed
- Partner B listens without reacting or giving advice
- Partner B checks in on Heart, Head and Body
- You respond briefly to each other if that feels natural
That's it. Five minutes. But done consistently, it's one of the most powerful things couples can do for their connection.
Why It Works
Research from the Gottman Institute shows that couples who regularly create small moments of connection — what Gottman calls "turning toward" each other — build stronger and more stable relationships over time.
The Heart-Head-Body method works because it integrates three layers of human experience. Emotion, thought, and physical sensation are each a different access channel to who someone is. By addressing all three, you get closer to your partner than any single topic could.
The structure also creates safety: you know what's coming, you know how long it takes, and there's no pressure to do it perfectly.
In the Relove App
The Relove app guides you through the Heart-Head-Body check-in every day. You get one question per dimension — carefully crafted by Joey — and share your answer with your partner.
Over time you see patterns in your check-ins. On which days are you both at your best? When does stress show up? The app makes this visible without judgment.
